Firms Need To Get To Know Their Supply Chain
Supply chain management is important in any economy, but in times like these, it may be your firm's most under-used and misunderstood tactics for controlling costs and mitigating risks. Experts say that too many small and midsize companies think of supply chain only in terms of their transportation costs -- what is the cheapest way to move an item from point A to point B — but true supply chain management looks at controlling the costs across the organization and how to streamline all departments. For example, Scott Riddle, senior partner with Greensboro logistics firm M33 Integrated Solutions, tells of one local client his firm has that was bragging about the cheap shipping rates it was able to negotiate. But it had multiple people in the shipping department negotiating for those rates when the job could have been handled by one. So, while the client may have saved on the shipping itself, the overall cost of shipping was much higher than it needed to be. "They spent a lot of money in order to get those cheap rates, so it's counter-intuitive," Riddle says.

A logistics concept grows in North Carolina
Coalition pushes North Carolina's Piedmont Triad as global logistics hub   A coalition of businesses, educational institutions, and economic development agencies in North Carolina's Piedmont Triad region has an ambitious goal: to make the area (which includes the cities of Greensboro, High Point, and Winston-Salem) the biggest global logistics hub on the U.S. East Coast. The presence of more than two dozen distribution centers for companies like Kmart, Liberty Hardware, Polo Ralph Lauren, and Dell testifies to the area's appeal as a logistics hub. Some 40 third-party logistics service companies, including locally headquartered M33 Integrated and New Breed, serve the DCs and manufacturing plants nearby.

Logistics, logically
As the Triad's manufacturing base has eroded, a key support industry to those manufacturers has only increased its value to the regional economy — logistics and distribution.   Logistics is all about moving goods from one point to another. Doing so quickly and efficiently is the challenge, and it is becoming more complex as new software and radio frequency tags are used to coordinate shipping, packaging, distribution, tracking and inventory control. This kind of work is the lifeblood of local companies such as M33 Integrated Solutions, New Breed Logistics and Epes Logistics.

Consolidation expected for trucking industry
by Francis B. Allgood At home or for your business, when you think about it, almost all the goods we buy came on a truck, from tires to televisions to capacitors to a stylish vase. But what happens when Michelin NA reports it will cut 1,840 workers in South Carolina due to poor market conditions, Circuit City Stores Inc. announces it will liquidate all assets, Kemet Corp. reports a 16.6% decrease in third quarter net sales, and Pier 1 Imports Inc. begins to negotiate for rental reductions with landlords? [...] According to Jeff Thomas, director of carrier relations for M33 Integrated Solutions in Greenville, the number of trucking failures may reach a new high. Since 1990, the record for the number of companies with five or more trucks to go out of business was in 2001 with 3,990. For the first three quarters of 2008, 2,690 firms were reported closed.
